Amazing Nutritional Benefits of Oyster Mushrooms

Oysters mushrooms are a group of mushrooms found in most continents on earth. So far, there are several known types of these mushrooms. Pleurotus ostreatus, also called American oyster mushroom, is a common species widely used. All oyster mushrooms are edibles, and you can find people enjoying them in dishes like stir-fries and pasta.

These are also among the oldest types of mushrooms to have been used in traditional medicinal approaches. They are rich in vitamins, fibre, minerals, and other essential nutrients. For those following low carb dietary patterns, oysters are a perfect choice because they have low carbohydrate levels.

This article covers several benefits associated with oyster mushrooms. Let's get started;

Promotes Blood Sugar Regulation

Blood sugar levels are also becoming an issue of concern lately. A study that targeted people with type 2 diabetes discovered that oyster might help speed sugar use in the body cells. However, this may also inhibit proteins responsible for increasing sugar in the blood.

Eating about 150 grams of cooked oysters for seven days can help reduce fasting blood sugars and post-meal blood sugar level. This may also help lower cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood pressure levels.

Haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is a marker for blood sugar control. Oysters have been found, in a study, to help reduce this HbA1c. This may, in turn, help regulate blood sugar levels in the body.

May Promote Heart Health

Oyster mushrooms may help reduce heart disease-related factors like high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels. For example, mushrooms have fibres like beta-glucans that benefit the heart. In addition, beta-glucans undergo fermentation to produce fatty acids that may help reduce cholesterol levels in your body.

Interestingly, oyster mushrooms produce more than twice the amount of beta-glucans other types of mushrooms like button mushrooms make. As a result, oysters can also help lower insulin levels, triglycerides, and blood pressure. This may, in turn, help lower heart disease risks.

Rich in Antioxidants

Antioxidants are substances that can help reduce damage to cells in the body. Oyster mushrooms are rich in these substances. For example, seven phenolics, including chlorogenic acid, naringenin, and gallic acid, are present in oyster mushrooms. All these compounds act as antioxidants in the body.

According to a 2007 study, oyster mushroom extracts were found to lower specific inflammatory markers and improve antioxidant levels. Further studies also showed that oyster antioxidant effects might help protect the liver against toxic chemicals. However, most of this research and more in human beings need to be confirmed.

Immune-Supportive Benefits

Oyster mushrooms also support the immune system either directly or indirectly. Pleuran is a type of beta-glucan fibre present in Oysters that may have immune-modulating properties. Additionally, the mushrooms have antibacterial and antiviral effects.

Pleuran may also be combined with other compounds to promote your general health. For example, pleuran can be combined with zinc and vitamin C supplements to help reduce the severity of respiratory symptoms. Pleuran, with the help of other compounds, has also been linked with helping reduce respiratory tract infections in children and upper respiratory tract infections.
